The Next Sensible Thing
The useful action in front of you is often smaller than the plan in your head.
When something goes wrong, I can produce a full plan before the kettle boils. It may include several people, three possible outcomes and a strongly held view about who should do what.
Occasionally a plan is needed. Often I have simply run ahead because I cannot bear the uncertainty of where I am.
The next sensible thing is usually smaller. Make the call. Tell the truth. Apologise without explaining it away. Ask for help. Leave a decision until I have the information to make it.
Small actions do not give me the thrill of having solved my entire future. They do have the advantage of being possible today.
I still like a plan. I am learning that a plan works better when I have first checked where I am standing.
